RoadSafe South East is a community road safety group committed to reducing the road toll in the south east of Melbourne.

YOU can make a difference to Road Safety! Whether you are a driver, cyclist, pedestrian, motorcyclist or passenger – there are many things you can do to make yourself & others safer on our roads.
RoadSafe South East is a community road safety group committed to reducing the road toll in the municipalities of Bayside, Cardinia, Casey, Frankston, Greater Dandenong, Kingston and Mornington Peninsula.

It aims to do this by working in partnership with local and state government, sporting & community groups, schools, local businesses and community members.

RoadSafe South East is funded by the Victorian Community Road Safety Partnership Program (VCRSPP) and by generous contributions from the community and our partners.

RoadSafe South East Inc. aims to:
• Achieve a reduction in road trauma in the Southern Metropolitan Area.
• Develop and implement community programs that will target the behaviour and attitudes of road user groups or vehicle or road environment improvement.
• Develop community support for road safety, particularly the seeking of sponsorship from local commerce and industry for road safety initiatives.
• Develop liaison between municipalities, police, fire brigade, local businesses, media, service organisations, community groups and the Roads Corporation.
• Develop diverse community involvement in and responsibility for road safety behavioural programs within the region.
• Encourage the involvement of the community to reflect the cultural diversity that the region represents and to encompass the broad demographics of the area.

The majority of programs listed here are able to be delivered at no charge to community groups, schools, sporting clubs, organisations and other local groups within the RoadSafe South East region (municipalities of Bayside, Cardinia, Casey, Frankston, Greater Dandenong, Kingston & Mornington Peninsula).

Looking After Our Mates (LAOM)
Looking After Our Mates (LAOM) sessions can be delivered to sporting clubs, community groups, businesses, organisations and in schools to Year 12 students. LAOM is a drug and drink drive information session about responsible drinking, safe driving and looking after your friends. Topics covered include drug & drink driving as road safety issues, the effects of drugs & alcohol on the body and performance, the law and strategies that can be used to avoid drug & drink driving. The presentation runs for 1 hour, is interactive, held at your own venue at a time that is suitable for your participants and is free.
Child Restraint Checks
Free community Child Restraint Check Days are held throughout the year in each of the municipalities within RoadSafe South East. Parents, grandparents and others are able to attend the event and have their child restraint/s checked by professional fitters at no charge. Adjustments are made to ensure the restraint is fitted correctly & safely, drivers are informed of the adjustments made to their restraints and the reasons why they were made, to ensure a better understanding of how to use a child restraint correctly. Fit to Drive Workshops (F2D)
Fit to Drive (F2D) Workshops are delivered in schools to Year 11 students. It has a focus on personal safety, responsibility and strategies to make them safer drivers and passengers. The half-day workshop involves small group activities and group presentations using trained facilitators. Students hear from the Victoria Police, MFB or CFA and trained F2D facilitators. Fit to Drive encourages young people’s ownership of the issue – exercising choices, responsibility and accountability. It also assists development of personal and interpersonal, problem solving and decision making skills. The program incorporates the notion that young people have the capacity to change attitudes in relation to risky driving and supports them to take ownership and responsibility for their own and their peers’ safety. Road Awareness Program (RAP)
The Road Awareness Program (RAP) is a practical school-based program delivered to secondary schools within the City of Casey (& other areas in the region on request & where available). The 3 hour partnered program is delivered to Year 11, 12 and VCAL students, and includes the following:
• Local road rescue units of CFA or SES demonstrating an actual road rescue with the assistance of a DVD and hands on experience (includes a simulated ‘Car Cut’).
• A CFA presentation on the ‘first hand’ experience of road trauma and the ‘ripple’ effect it has on family, friends and the community.
• Victoria Police deliver the ‘It won’t happen to me’ presentation – discussing the effects of alcohol, drugs and fatigue on motorists.
• A crash survivor shares his personal story of how a ‘drive with the boys’ turns out to be a fight for life and life of medical reliance and depravation of freedom and experiences.

Teenagers Road Accident Group (TRAG)
Teenagers Road Accident Group (TRAG) deliver information sessions to Year 12 students across the RoadSafe South East & other regions. TRAG was set up to raise the awareness of young people to the dangers on the road and to their responsibilities when they get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. TRAG consists of a number of key stakeholders, including CFA members, ambulance officers, police officers and those who have first-hand experience with road trauma.
Wiser Driver – Older Drivers
The Wiser Driver program is designed to encourage older people to become safer and wiser drivers. Attendees have an opportunity to upgrade their knowledge about road safety and to discuss related issues with their peers. It provides older drivers with advice about the effects of various types of impairments on driving ability, such as the effects of medication, fatigue, alcohol and poor eyesight. The program also provides information on safer vehicles and planning for future mobility needs. The program is delivered 2 hours per week over a 4 week period, does not involve tests and is offered free to community groups. Groups that may be interested include: Seniors, Retirement Villages, Probus, CWA, Community Centres, Lions, Police Senior Citizens Registers and any other groups of older people.
Keeping Safe and Mobile – Older Drivers
Keeping Safe and Mobile provides information and resources to assist older drivers to understand the mental and physical changes that take place as we age and the need to plan for our future mobility needs. The two hour seminar consists of a presentation from RACV, a personal quiz, opportunity for the participants to reflect on their own driving ability and a presentation from an occupational therapist. The program provides the tools for older drivers to accurately self-assess their current driving skills and plan for their future driving needs. The program is delivered in partnership with the TAC, La Trobe University & RACV and is free to community groups. Groups that may be interested include: Seniors, Retirement Villages, Probus, CWA, Community Centres, Lions, Police Senior Citizens Registers and any other groups of older people.
Bike Ed Instructor Training - Teachers
Bike Ed is a school safe cycling resource produced by Vic Roads, recommended for use with students in Years 4 to 6 and 7 to 12. Completion of the Bike Ed Instructor Course results in a DEECD cycling instructor certification required to conduct on-road cycling programs. To improve student road safety awareness, promote bicycle riding as a healthy transport alternative and improve riding skills, RoadSafe South East financially supports training for schools. Teachers from schools in the RoadSafe South East region are encouraged to apply for funding to undertake the Bike Ed Instructor Course.

Other initiatives and programs that RoadSafe South East is involved in:
• Bike Ed Challenge in Frankston/Mornington Peninsula that brings together school students from Bike Ed trained schools in a skills-test event. The students compete in school teams and work their way through a series of obstacles/skills-tests over the day. It increases children’s health, fitness and riding skills, while also helping them to become safe and confident road users.

• MRA Cranbourne GP Run where motorcyclists gather before heading to the Philip Island Grand Prix event held in October each year. Through a road safety stall, we distribute a range of educational & information material to riders, their families and members of the community - promoting road safety messages for motorcyclists, including the importance of wearing the correct safety gear.

• Westernport Festival held in February each year, to promote safe motorcycle & dirt bike riding. In partnership with the Hastings Motorcycle Action Group (MAG), who engages Whip Industries to perform their Mini Motorbikes Freestyle Show throughout the Festival, a range of motorcycle safety information is distributed, as well as promotion of MAG’s main message – Right Bike, Right Gear, Right Place.

• Winter Wine Weekend held in June each year in Red Hill brings large numbers of people to wine tastings. Through a road safety stall, we provide wristbands & meal vouchers to Designated Drivers, conduct breath tests for attendees over the day and provide a wide range of information on drink/drug driving and strategies & resources to avoid drink driving.

• SAM Trailer Programs delivered by local governments using Speed Alert Mobile (SAM) Trailers, the aim is to reduce vehicle travel speeds on local roads where speeding is known to be an issue. The program incorporates speed trailers, speed statistics, driver education and Police enforcement. The SAM trailers provide immediate feedback to drivers, presenting current travel speeds and alerting the need to modify behaviour to those speeding.

• Banner Trailer is a large A-frame trailer that displays road safety banners on both sides, providing drivers with key messages on road safety. The trailer is used at locations throughout the region and includes messages about speeding, drink driving, cycling, fatigue, drug driving and other road safety issues – reminding drivers to be safe on our roads.

• Driver Reviver Sites are an ideal place to take a break on a long journey. They offer a free cup of tea, coffee, a biscuit, or simply a place to stop and chat with the friendly volunteers before continuing safely on your journey. Each holiday season up to 220 Driver Reviver Sites open right across Australia. Driver Reviver is a community program operated by volunteers from a wide range of service organisations and community groups, whose members give up their own time to help reduce the road toll.

• Community Engagement through attendance at local community events and submitting local media articles around road safety issues; engaging with community groups & organisations to support road safety initiatives and linking individuals/groups with available road safety programs.
